År: 2003
Fynd: Hurrell- Mrs. Tillie Hurrell, a resident of Thunder Bay, after 89 fully lived years, died Sunday, April 13, 2003 at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, McKellar Site. Tillie was born May 19, 1913 in Fort William to Olaf Peter Sandberg and Anna Maria Sandberg (nee Tufting), who had emigrated from Ramsele, Sweden to live in Oliver Township and she lived her childhood on the family farm west of Murillo. During her student days at the Port Arthur Collegiate Institute she met her husand Hayward. They married December 27, 1941 and settled in Port Arthur. Three children were born and raised lovingly with the benefits of their parents' guidance, support and companionship. They are Peter of Thunder Bay, Douglas of Campbell River and Hilary of Vancouver. Tillie was a teacher in the local elementary school system and at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital. Also during her career she was employed by the Department of Indian Affairs, assisting northern students with the sometime difficult transition to living and learning in the city. However, the demands of these positions and home life did not stifle her urge to study: she gave new meaning to the term "continuing education" by earning at Lakehead University a Bachelor Of Arts degree in 1971 and a Masters degree in 1992 in English Literature. Recreation for Tillie included gardening, weaving, reading and family gatherings at home, at the homes of her children and grandchildren and at the cottage on Lake Shebandowan. She also loved to write, of which more below. She is survived by Hayward, by the children mentioned above, by grandchildren Lynne and Stephen of Thunder Bay, Christie of Toronto and Paul Pampu of Vancouver and by great grandchildren Erica and Meagan of Thunder Bay
